Dr Heather Williams is a Senior Medical Physicist for Central Manchester University Hospitals. Alongside working part-time and looking after her young family, she is also Director of ScienceGrrl, a network of (predominantly) female scientists who are passionate about passing on their love of science, technology, engineering and maths to the next generation. Their first project is a calendar showcasing the work of real women scientists and those inspired by science. This is currently half-price - £6 with free P&P - in their January sale.
"A neat, unobtrusive box arrived in the post on Saturday morning. I opened it, unwrapped the tissue, and was struck by the beautiful colour of these lovely pants - a soft red, almost like the inside of a watermelon! Pardon the shameless plug, but I thought it toned particularly well with the red of the ScienceGrrl logo on the front of our calendar, as you can see from the photo. [Note that I am strategically positioned to hide most of the domestic chaos in the lounge behind me... that's what happens when the boys have quality time with their toys.]
I've put my new pants through their paces today during a 12 hour shift at the hospital, where I'm the first point of contact for any queries about how our cameras, display monitors, computers and software are working. There's a lot of being interrupted, standing up, sitting down, walking around, and contorting myself around things to tinker with buttons and switches. It's not a good day for less-than-comfortable underwear. So it's very fortunate these are wonderfully soft and fit like a second skin. A long, hard day - but a good pants day.
It's great to know that, in treating myself to something so lovely, I am supporting a company that upcycles unwanted (but gorgeous) fabrics and provides training and a supportive working environment for vulnerable women. It's not surprising that WhoMadeYourPants has a strong following amongst female scientists - if you're going to get yourself some seriously nice pants, these are the logical choice."
ScienceGrrl and WhoMadeYourPants will be working together a lot more in 2013, watch out for more news soon! And you can follow Heather on twitter @alrightPET
